A rare and deeply personal letter from J.K. Rowling, dated 11 November 2005, written on official Rowling letterhead from Edinburgh. This typed letter was written in response to a reader suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS).
In her reply, Rowling expresses genuine empathy and discusses her close involvement with the MS Society Scotland, explaining that she has forwarded the correspondent’s letter to the organisation to ensure further support.
Historical Significance: Rowling’s commitment to this cause is profoundly personal; her mother, Anne Rowling, tragically died from complications of MS at the age of 49. This letter reflects far more than a routine secretarial response; it is a rare instance of Rowling personally engaging with correspondence on a subject close to her heart.
The letter is personally signed “J K Rowling” in blue ink and includes the delightful handwritten addition “(also ‘Jo’!)”—a rare informal touch seldom seen outside of her private inner circle.
By 2005, at the height of Harry Potter fame, Rowling received an overwhelming volume of mail and rarely replied personally. This letter, combining a personal connection to her mother’s legacy with a rare form of her signature, represents a remarkable piece of Rowling memorabilia.
Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Adam Houston of The Harry Potter Specialist, the world’s sole expert in J.K. Rowling’s signature.
