The left column shows genuine signatures by J.K. Rowling.

From top to bottom, this column shows authentic signatures placed by J.K. Rowling in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, and 2007 — the respective publication years of the seven Harry Potter novels.

The right column shows non-authentic examples.

When the first book in the Harry Potter series was published in 1997, J.K. Rowling was still adapting to signing under her author’s name. At her publisher’s request, she had changed her name from Joanne Rowling to J.K. Rowling, the “K” not representing a second given name but being adopted in honour of her grandmother, Kathleen. In the earliest years, her signature shows signs of experimentation and variation, which may reflect this transition. Over time — and in part because she was asked to sign books extremely frequently — her signature evolved into an increasingly fluent, confident, and consistent form.

This natural development over time is one reason why dating and context matter. A signature style that belongs to an earlier period but appears in a later publication can be a strong indicator that a signature was added at a different time.

For that reason, specialists do not assess a signature in isolation. They compare letterforms, rhythm and pen-lift patterns, pressure, placement, and overall fluency — and they consider whether the signature’s characteristics align with the book’s publication era and known signing practices.

Signed Harry Potter books can be wonderful to collect, and careful examination helps collectors make informed decisions. This display encourages visitors to compare, question, and learn how authenticity is evaluated in practice.
