A highly deceptive case

The Ickabog was released in 2020 and was first published online by J.K. Rowling as a free serial. Children from around the world submitted illustrations, many of which were selected for the printed edition. All royalties were donated to charitable causes.
Authentically signed copies of The Ickabog are extremely rare. This display presents a case that closely resembles verified genuine examples and demonstrates the limits of visual inspection.

What makes this case so difficult to assess?

At first glance, this copy of The Ickabog aligns extremely closely with known genuine signed examples. The signature shows convincing fluency, rhythm, and confidence, and the hologram sticker corresponds visually with authentic versions currently in use.
The hologram type shown here was introduced in late 2007 and remains in use today. In this case, no single visible feature immediately raises concern. Only after prolonged, highly detailed comparative examination alongside verified reference material do subtle inconsistencies become apparent.
These discrepancies are not detectable through casual inspection and require specialist knowledge, access to controlled reference material, and experience with the full range of authentic variations.
Certain technical observations identified during this assessment are intentionally not disclosed. Sharing such details publicly could risk enabling further imitation rather than preventing it.
This case illustrates why even apparently flawless examples must be approached with caution, and why expert-level examination remains essential in the field of modern signed books.
