A Ted Smart edition examined

Issued in May 1998 for Ted Smart / The Book People, this special mail-order edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone offered a more accessible alternative to the extremely rare Bloomsbury first hardback printing. First Ted Smart printings are identifiable by the number line 10–1 and are therefore frequently examined with particular care.

Can you identify the detail that does not align with an early Ted Smart printing?

The key issue is not a typographical error, but a chronological inconsistency — combined with subtle differences in print quality.
In this copy, a later Ted Smart printing has been modified by removing the original title and copyright leaf and inserting a newly printed replacement intended to resemble the earliest Ted Smart printing with number line 10–1. Close examination reveals differences in print sharpness and letter definition that are consistent with modern reproduction rather than factory printing from the late 1990s.
More decisively, the verso of the title page lists:
“Also Available: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
This line cannot belong to the earliest Ted Smart Philosopher’s Stone printing. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was first published by Bloomsbury on 2 July 1998 — after the Ted Smart edition had already been issued in May 1998.
This example demonstrates how an edition may closely resemble an early printing in appearance, yet fail when examined in bibliographical context. Publication chronology, paper, and print characteristics together provide essential tools for accurate assessment.
