First Dutch Translation. First Printing, 1960. Translation by Max Schuchart. This is the third translation of The Hobbit, following the Swedish (1947) and German (1957) editions. The translation is based on the seventh printing of The Hobbit, published by Allen & Unwin in 1955.
The book includes the two maps by Tolkien: “Thrors kaart” (Thror's Map) on pp. [6-7] and “Wilderland” on pp. [8-9], with calligraphed place names translated into Dutch. See Hammond, Section G, Page 391.
This is a superb copy of a notoriously fragile book. The cover and spine are free from the usual wear and creasing found on most examples. The interior is also in excellent condition, with a very firm binding—appears unread. There is a brown spot on the verso of the halftitle page, a small stamp on the bottom of the halftitle page and a discreet, handwritten book number at the top, but otherwise the book is in outstanding condition—the best we’ve ever seen. The pages are naturally browned with age, as expected. A remarkably well-preserved and highly collectible copy.
